2026 planning guide
How much video production costs
A simple edit can cost a few hundred dollars. A recurring founder-led system usually needs thousands per month. A shoot-led campaign can run into five figures. Those numbers make sense once the quote separates the edit from the thinking, capture and distribution around it.
Working video budget ranges by format
These are USD planning ranges reviewed in August 2026. They combine current marketplace data, public agency pricing and Trueframe's own published scope. They are not universal averages.
| Format | Working range | Main price driver |
|---|---|---|
| Short-form edit from supplied footage | $150-$750 per video | Footage quality and edit complexity |
| Founder-led content system | $2,000-$10,000+ per month | How much of the system the partner owns |
| Weekly YouTube programme | $2,000-$8,000+ per month | Research, packaging and footage volume |
| Explainer or product video | $3,000-$20,000 per project | Animation, crew, locations and revisions |
| Testimonial or case-study shoot | $2,000-$15,000 per project | Travel, subjects, crew and usage |
| Brand film or campaign | $15,000-$50,000+ per project | Shoot days, talent and production complexity |
The six inputs that change the quote
01
Research and concept
The buyer problem, angle and claim before anyone opens an edit timeline.
02
Script and planning
Interview prep, scripts, shot lists, schedules and approvals.
03
Capture
Remote direction or crew, cameras, lighting, sound, locations and travel.
04
Post-production
Footage volume, captions, motion, colour, sound and animation.
05
Versions and rights
Aspect ratios, cutdowns, stock, music, raw files and paid usage.
06
Distribution and review
Publishing, packaging, performance review and the next creative decision.
Use gross profit to test the budget
Divide the content spend by gross profit from one new client. A $15,000 system and $10,000 gross profit per client needs 1.5 extra clients to pay back. Plan for two. Then check whether the content, offer and sales path can reasonably create those wins inside the time window you are funding.
Break-even formula
Total content spend ÷ gross profit per client = extra clients needed

Video production cost FAQ
How much does video production cost?
A clean edit from footage you supply can cost $150 to $750 per short video. Ongoing founder-led content systems commonly need a working budget of $2,000 to $10,000 or more per month. A one-off explainer, testimonial, brand film or shoot-led campaign can cost $2,000 to $50,000 or more. Format, footage, crew, animation, revisions and usage rights move the number.
How does this video production cost calculator work?
The calculator starts with published working ranges by format, multiplies by quantity, then applies visible factors for footage, ownership, edit complexity and turnaround. It rounds the result to the nearest $100. It is a planning model, not a quote or a claim that every provider uses the same pricing.
Why can two 60-second videos cost completely different amounts?
Runtime hides the work around the edit. One 60-second video may start with organised footage and a finished script. Another may need research, concepting, a crew, locations, animation, actors, music rights, several aspect ratios and multiple review rounds. Compare the included work line by line.
Is a video agency cheaper than hiring in-house?
It often is before a company has enough daily volume for a full content function. One editor does not cover positioning, research, writing, production, distribution and measurement. In-house wins when you can keep the full function busy, manage it well and need daily access.
What should a video production quote include?
A useful quote names the finished deliverables, aspect ratios, filming assumptions, crew, scripts, revision rounds, turnaround, music and stock licences, raw-file access, paid usage, travel, publishing and performance review. Any blank becomes work or risk the buyer still owns.
What does Trueframe cost?
Trueframe publishes three starting points in USD: a $500 Strategy Intensive, a 12-week Founder Brand Sprint from $15,000 and a Fly-Out Capture Day from $25,000. The calculator covers a wider market range and does not replace a scoped Trueframe quote.
